New laptop!

  • Hey guys, this time I'm really going to buy a new laptop (I think tomorrow), and I'd love some of your feedback to finalize my decision :)

I decided to go for a MSI, I didn't know this brand before yesterday, but it appears to be a good quality/price ratio (most of these laptops don't have any OS included so it has a lower price).

I used this website: Full Processors Ranking - Surlix.com to compare all the different GPU and CPU of all the laptops I took a look at.

    So I was hesitating between:

    • LDLC.com - High-Tech Expérience
    • MSI GP60 2PE-047XFR Leopard
    • => Intel Core i5-4200H 2,8 GHz (ranked 324), NVIDIA GeForce 840M (ranked 167), 4 Go RAM, 15.6", 500 Go storage
    • 619€

    • LDLC.com - High-Tech Expérience
    • MSI GE60 2PL-075XFR Apache
    • => Intel Core i5-4200H 2,8 GHz (ranked 324), NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M (ranked 93), 8 Go RAM, 15.6", 500 Go storage
    • 729€

You can scroll down to see the full specifications (yeah it's in french but shouldn't be hard to understand anyway :D )

The Apache has the same CPU but a quite better GPU than the Leopard, and also 4 more Go of RAM. I think that's pretty much the only relevant differences between those 2 laptops.

Do you think this better GPU and more RAM would affect the performance a lot? Since it has the same CPU?
And would you put 110€ more to get the Apache or would you go for the Leopard?

Also after that, I noticed that both these laptops have a max resolution of (only) 1366 x 768. Do you think it's enough for a decent gaming experience, or even to watch HD movies?

I personally wasn't sure so I checked for other MSI laptops and found that one:

    • LDLC.com - High-Tech Expérience
    • MSI GP70 2PE-028XFR Leopard
    • => Intel Core i5-4200H 2,8 GHz (ranked 324), NVIDIA GeForce 840M (ranked 167), 4 Go RAM, 17.3", 750 Go storage
    • 679€

And it has a max resolution of 1920 x 1080 (and also a bigger screen size, and 250 Go more storage).
Other than that, it has pretty much the same specs as the first Leopard.

So, what would you go for between those 3? I personally don't care about the 17.3 screen size instead of 15.6, but would this better resolution really affect my gaming/watching experience?

Thanks for taking the time to read and (maybe) answer :D

  • the problem is that there is no ideal laptop. It depends on many things.Do you have a external display->yes? => then you can ignore the screen resolution->no? => then it depends on which games you wanna play and if you want to watch a movie. If you want to use it for Word and other Things (maybe porn or whatever) then you don't need that much ram.I think it's very hard to tell you which laptop is the best. And I think I know what happens when you buy the laptop. You want to buy the one with 4GB Ram. You go to the website, you put it in the to card. And you want to press the buy button. And then your minds says "FUCK IT, I take the other one. And you buy the 8gb one. [that would happen to me]

  • What about the MSI GP60-2PEI585FD?
    15.6 Full HD Screen, 2 GB GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce 840M, Intel Core i5-4200M, 3,1GHz, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD.
And in Austria/Germany you can get it for 650€ :)

PS: Please make sure to do some research before, I have no experience with this laptop, just found it, but the specs look good.

  • What about the MSI GP60-2PEI585FD?

I checked and the CPU has lower performance, but thanks for replying ^^

    lmao xD

I want to do pretty much everything, using word, web surfing, watching movies, gaming (but it's okay if I can't play on highest resolutions, and anyway for now I do not wish to play anything else than CoD4 and LoL :D Maybe I'll begin playing other games, but I'm not planning on playing the newest games which are asking for a very high performance PC).

About the screen resolution, I don't have an external display, so I just spent almost 1 hour checking what was better for me between a 1920 x 1080 resolution and a 1366 x 768 resolution. I was going to go for 1366 x 768 because I read that the difference isn't that big on a 15.6 screen, and it asks for less performance to play on 1366 x 768. But I read some commentaries from people saying that 1366 x 768 was kind of a shitty resolution for a laptop, so I changed my screen resolution (my current laptop has 1920 x 1080, or 1600 x 900, not sure) to 1280 x 768, and I must say it kinda scared me. The desktop looks a lot smaller, with bigger icons, and here are screenshots on the different resolutions:

    1600 x 900 : http://gyazo.com/62e0115a087173258c6630e401c57d45
    1280 x 768 : http://gyazo.com/3437616dcd6e58925f62c00227a60ddc

Maybe I'm just used to a good quality screen and I would get used to a lower one, but the 1280 x 768 looked kinda terrible to me, very "pixelized" :-/

I thought the difference would have been very small, almost not seenable by the human eye... Apparently not :D Can anyone relate to this? Someone who would have tried both screen resolutions maybe? Did you find the difference very big?
Would I see a difference, watching a movie in 720p on a 1920 x 1080 screen or on a 1366 x 768 screen? I thought I couldn't, I thought the 1080p screen would be useless for watching videos under 1080p, but after changing my screen resolution, I'm not even sure anymore xD

    Edit:
Also maybe I'm just tired, but it looks a lot more comfortable to surf on the web (to read etc) on a 1920 x 1080 res than on a 1366 x 768... Can anyone relate to this also? :P

  • 1920*1080 (when used to it) vs a lower screen rate is outmost terrible.

but the worst part about a laptop is no laptop in that price range will fit ALL your criteria. even if the money product compare is fair.

there is always 1 or 2 specs you would rather see different.

I wouldn't rush it too much.
school almost starts again which means : big sales ! (maybe a 900 euro range laptop for about 650+- )

    good luck.

I'm not 100% sure what this means, you mean if I'm used to 1920 x 1080, a lower screen size like 1366 x 768 will look completely awful?

Yeah I guess so, but I'm pretty sure the laptops I listed in my first post would be enough for me ^^ Indeed for 600 or even 700 euros I can't have the best laptop ever, but the MSI laptops look like really good quality/price ratio laptops, and they have already waaaay better CPU and GPU than my current laptop (and when my current laptop wasn't overheating, I could play CoD4 in 1600 x 900 with no problem I think, now I play in 1200 x 768 and I get 50 fps most of the time even on custom maps, which really sucks).

I wouldn't rush it too much.

Eh, but when will that be? T.T I really can't bear my laptop anymore, in the summer it's even more awful, my hands are burning when I'm playing, it makes a LOT of noise, and in 2 weeks, it already auto-stopped 3 times to prevent overheating damages... And 2 times I wasn't even playing, I was watching a movie...

Now I've spent a lot of time looking for different laptops and specs, and those ones seem to be really great for the price. We have sales in the summer, so I've watched for other laptops which had prices reductions, but they had still lower specs than the ones listed above, for the same price (after reduction). Even an HP laptop with original cost at 900€, at 33% reduction, had lower CPU and GPU (and btw I really don't want a HP anymore, all my friends and myself had overheating problems with this brand).

    good luck.

    Thanks :P
    I think I'm gonna go for the 3rd one (MSI GP70 2PE-028XFR Leopard), because I don't think I'll be able to switch from a 1600 x 900 laptop to a 1366 x 768 laptop...

  • I changed my mind and decided to buy something a bit more expensive :D

    LDLC.com - High-Tech Expérience

Now I just have to decide, whether I should take no warranty extension (so 1 year warranty), 1 year extension (2 total) for 32€, or 4 years extension (5 years total) for 203€ (and some additional benefits: LDLC.com - High-Tech Expérience yeah it's in french :D ).

I will take at least the 1 year warranty extension. Do you think it's worth the price to extend it to 5 years?
What do you think of warranty extensions in general?
I'm not planning on buying a new laptop any time soon, as I think I'm going to buy a pretty decent one regarding my needs. As long as it's still working fine, I think I would keep it 5 years.

  • Did I get that right, you have Windows 8 on your laptop by choice, and even paid for it?! =O

I was expecting someone to say that xD
All people I know and who know a bit in "informatics" told me windows 8 is better than 7 (especially in performance, booting time and stuff like that), some people just have a hard time adapting to it :D
And yeah I paid for it because I think 60€ for an OS isn't expensive (The pro version costs 279€ if you aren't a student, and the normal version 119, so 60€ for the pro version is really cheap IMO ^^ ).
And an OS is a big part of your computer experience, I prefer to buy it than to have a cracked version (I don't know how it would work for updates etc and I don't want to take the time to get into it anyway ^^ ).

Anyways, have fun with your new laptop.

    Thanks :D

  • Yeah it's good I like it :D Well I always use the "desktop" and not the "application launcher" or however it's called though :D
I'm okay to pay 60€ for it once :)
And I'm using office 2007 :D I got a product key of it so I keep using it ^^
